Directions to our Building

  • We are located at the Washington Navy Yard. Generally, the preferred access point is at 6th Street and M Street, S.E. in Washington, D.C. (At times, security or other situations will cause the entrance point to change to another gate on M Street or 11thStreet, S.E.. Signs will be posted, when applicable).
    • This is a secure facility, protected by armed DOD Police Officers, U.S. Marines, U.S. Navy Law Enforcement Petty Officers (Master-at-Arms) and Military Working Dogs.
      • You must show a photo ID (Driver’s License or other official ID) and if accessing via motor vehicle, must have a properly registered, insured and maintained vehicle.
    • Upon arrival at the entrance gate and after being granted access to the installation, proceed straight to the end of the road (the Anacostia River) will be in front of you and a flagpole with three flags will be a landmark.
      • Make a left. On your right will be the U.S.S. Barry (DD 933). Proceed as far as you can (there is a building at the end of the road).
      • Make a left (the white building is on your left, the Navy Art Gallery, also white, is in front and slightly to the right of you). Follow the roadway between the two red brick buildings (one on each side of you).
    • You will come to a “T” intersection at the end of the roadway. Make a right.
      • You will quickly come to a stop sign. (A full stop is required or you will get a ticket if caught or for exceeding the speed limit).
      • On the left (at the corner) is the Navy Exchange. On the right is an office building and pub.
    • Proceed straight ahead (toward the water).
    • On the left will be a multi-story parking structure. On the right (below grade) you will see a parking lot and a red brick building with a blue awning at its entrance. That is our building. Building 154.
    • Just before the road ends by the water and the metal fence, there is an opening to enter the parking lot to the right.
      • Please take that road, drive towards our building (your back will now be to the water and you will be driving in the direction from which you came).
        • Park in any legal (white lined) parking space.
        • Enter our building, present your photo ID and ask state the reason you are there. You will be helped from that point.
    • If you have any challenges, please call us at 703-740-1138.

          • It is highly suggested to help the cadet mature, develop and excel in our program and in life.

  • Age 14 - 17 (NSCC Cadets)
    • Boot Camp is two-weeks and is called Recruit Training.
      • For cadets, age 14 and above, attending boot camp (two weeks)and advanced training (two sessions per year) is optional, but is required for promotion within the program.
    • To attend NSCC Boot Camp, cadets must sucessfully complete BMR Chapters (not Assignments) 1, 5, 6, 9, and 10, submit it and have it graded BEFORE the start of the training.
    • If joining the unit at age 13 and below, a cadet may attend boot camp twice (one week initially as an NLCC cadet and then after age 13, two more weeks as an NSCC cadet).
    • If joining the unit at age 14 and above, a cadet may attend boot camp once (two weeks).

    • NLCC cadets (age 10 - 13) may attend advanced training for one week. Opportunities are limited.
      • Advanced training for NLCC cadets is optional and not required for promotion within the program.
        • For NLCC advanced training opportunities, consult the Training database on the Compass website

          • Many cadets find it to be less expensive and of more value in life than summer camp or day care.
            • For NLCC advanced training opportunities, consult the Training database on the Compass website

Boot Camp and Advanced Training Costs

  • NLCC Boot Camp (ages 10 to 13) and one-week advanced training costs are $145 ($20.71/day), which includes all training, meal and berthing (sleeping) costs.
  • NSCC Boot Camp (ages 13 to 17) and two-week advanced training costs are $268 ($19.14 per day), which includes all training, meal and berthing (sleeping) costs.
    • Transportation to boot camp and advanced training locations may be available at no additional costs, but is dependent on adult volunteer availability.
      • If transportation is not provided by the unit, cadets are responsible for their own transportation to and from the training location.
    • In order to attend boot camp, cadets must be enrolled at least six weeks prior to the beginning of boot camp.
      • The six weeks is added to our unit’s one to two week paperwork processing time, so cadets must submit their completed enrollment paperwork package and payment of the enrollment fee at least eight weeks prior to the beginning of boot camp.

Attendance Requirement

  • Attendance at all drills and activities is voluntary, but we require that you attend an average of at least 75% of the time, so you get the most out of the learning, fun and fellowship.
    • To allow for school, church, sports and family events that occur on weekends and during the summer, we do our best to minimize time requirements and burdens on cadets and their families.
      • By keeping the activity schedule to an average of just two times per month, we help the environment by conserving energy (gasoline, heat/air conditioning and electric), wear and tear (vehicle and personal) and allow plenty of time for school work, sports, family commitments and other desires/needs.
    • We realize that cadets and adult volunteers are involved in after-school, sports, church and other weekend activities. We feel our attendance policy is fair and does not burden members. A result of our attendance requirement is cadets are able to practice the principles of time management and decision-making.
    • We offer the opportunity for college scholarships or advanced enlistments in the military, with a higher degree of success. Accordingly, frequent attendance at our program may be considered a wise investment of time and effort.
      • We encourage cadets to consider their futures and manage their time accordingly, so they can attend our drills as well as sports, school related, church related and other activities they may be involved in.
    • Membership in our unit is a privilege and it requires a commitment to attend.
    • Cadets not attending at least 75% of the unit drills and activities during a six month consecutive period will forfeit advancement (promotion) to a higher rank and will not be eligible for promotion until the minimum attendance requirement is met for at least six months.
      • Cadets habitually not attending at least 75% of the time are removed from the program.

How to get a Promotion - NLCC Cadets (Age 10 - 13)

  • Step Three– Successfully complete a review by the unit’s advancement (promotion) selection board.
    • The selection board consists of senior cadets and adult volunteers.
      • The board screens and interviews candidates eligible for promotion and make a recommendation to the unit’s commanding officer on whether or not to promote the cadet.
    • In addition to ensuring the cadet meets the minimum requirements (stated above) for advancement, the board considers the cadets verbal responses to interview questions; his/her military bearing, discipline and demonstrated leadership during the previous six months, as well as any awards earned by or written evaluations of the cadet and future leadership potential.
  • (Optional) Step Four– Completion of boot camp (one week) during winter, spring or summer school break (Boot camp is not required for cadets ages 10 to 13, but is highly suggested).
